In business since 1990, this tour company prides itself on hiring guides who know their history and have a wonderfull sense of humor. The walking tours involve more history; the driving tours on the Loretto Line trolley cover more sightseeing territory. The walking tour, leaves daily March through November at 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM. From December through February, the company offers only the morning tour. Fee is $10 per adult and free for children younger than 16 with a parent.

The open-air trams leave at 10 AM, noon, 2 and 4 PM, with additional tours added during the summer weeks. The one hour and 15-minute tour costs $9 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger and lasts about 75 minutes. The trolleys normally run from April through October depending on the weather. All tours depart from the Loretto Hotel.

Jeep tours focus on the natural history, ecology and archaeology of the Santa Fe area. Tour guides have advanced degrees in fields such as botany, geology and archaeology. The tours are fully insured. Regularly scheduled trips, such as into the Jémez Mountains, to Taos or into the national forest above Santa Fe, are offered from March through October. Prices begin at $55, and reservations are necessary. Outback Tours will pick you up at your hotel.

Randal Walker's Excellent Adventures

A four-wheel-drive vehicles will pick you up and take you outside the city to explore petroglyphs, cliff dwellings, river valleys or alpine country. The company offers hiking and biking excursions and several other adventures for up to seven guests. Water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen and even a day pack to carry them in come with the tours. An Adventure for the Physically Challenged, Guides design the trips to suit all ages, and abilities of the visitors. Half-day excursions begin at $65 per person; full-day trips start at $125. Reservations at least one day in advance.

Rojo Tours

Established in 1985, Rojo tours have developed a team of 25 mature, experienced, personable and knowledgeable Guides. College educated and long-time residents, our Guides are asked for by name again and again. Rojo tours offers a variety of customized tours and arranges packages for convention and meeting planners. In addition to Santa Fe driving and walking tours, they will take visitors to cave dwellings and Indian pueblos. Rojo offers an O'Keeffe country tour and a tour of fine-art studios and sculpture gardens. They'll also drive you to Taos, to Hispanic and Indian villages along the Rio Grande and even to Chaco Canyon in a 12-hour extravaganza. Santa Fe Detours

In town or out of town, by foot, raft or railroad, Santa Fe Detours has served visitors and residents for more than 15 years. This locally owned and operated company handles the bookings for the Roadrunner, the open-air yellow trolley that cruises Santa Fe's historic neighborhoods. This company will also arrange horseback riding, private guides for hiking and biking, Grayline bus tours and even help find tickets to popular performances. Prices depend on the services selected; they offer a comprehensive package that includes a ride on the Roadrunner and a walking tour for $17.

Santa Fe Soaring

Santa Fe Soaring presents scenic glider rides over the city and above the surrounding mountains on the STEMME S10 glider. A pilot and a single passenger quietly fly on the plane's 75-foot wing span. Flight time is about an hour, and the cost is $125. Reservations are recommended; usually flights can be planed the same day and departing from the Santa Fe Airport. Pictures are permitted.

Santa Fe Southern Railway

Known world-wide as simply "the Santa Fe," the Railway came into its namesake city in 1880. The 120 year-old spur from Lamy to Santa Fe and its terminus, the charming California mission-style depot at 410 S. Guadalupe are a piece of history which has fascinated people all over the world. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors come to see, photograph and paint the old Santa Fe Depot and ride the train along the original route that carried early tourist adventurers, settlers, artists and scientists into the city. The train stops in the village of Lamy, home of the Lamy Depot that is used by the Amtrak line and the Victorian-style Legal Tender Saloon & Restaurant. Passengers spend about 90 minutes in Lamy. Trains depart for the four-and-a-half-hour ride at 10:30 AM. Trips are on Thursday and Saturday every week of the year, with additional Tuesday trips March through April and additional Tuesday and Sunday trips April through October. From May through October the train offers Sunset/Starlight rides on Friday evenings with departure one hour before sunset; call for specific times. Tickets are $21 for ages 14 to 59; $16 for ages 7 to 13 and those older than 60; $5 for ages 3 to 6. Children 2 and younger ride free, with a limit of two per adult. Group rates, charters, private cars and school rates are available. Don't forget your Lunch.
